Tragic Loss: Former AFL Star Troy Selwood, Aged 40, Dies

Troy Selwood, a former Brisbane Lions player and brother of Geelong premiership captain Joel Selwood, has passed away at the age of 40.

His family announced his passing in a statement released by the AFL on Tuesday. They did not share any details about the cause of his death.

“We are heartbroken by the loss of our son, brother, and father, Troy, this morning. We will miss him more than words can express,” the family said. “Troy was a much-loved and loving member of our family. He brought joy and light to everyone who knew him.”

Troy Selwood’s AFL Journey

Born on May 1, 1984, Troy Selwood played 75 games for the Brisbane Lions in the Australian Football League (AFL). Later, he captained Geelong’s team in the Victorian Football League (VFL) from 2011 to 2013.

Selwood was drafted by the Brisbane Lions in 2002 as pick number 19 from Sandhurst. He made his AFL debut in 2005, wearing jersey number 28, in a match against St Kilda. Known for his endurance and defensive skills, he often played as a tagger, marking key opposition players.

In May 2009, Selwood was involved in a heavy collision with Richmond’s Alex Rance, which left him unconscious. The following year, after Round 21 of the 2010 season, Brisbane informed him that he would not be retained for the next season.

VFL Career and Retirement

Following his departure from the Brisbane Lions, Selwood moved back to Victoria and joined Geelong’s VFL team in 2011 while also pursuing a commerce degree. He was named co-captain that same year and, in 2012, led the team to a VFL premiership, defeating Port Melbourne by 33 points.

He retired from VFL football at the end of the 2013 season.

After his AFL career, he continued playing in the VFL for Geelong, where he captained the team to a premiership in 2012.

“The second one is a deflection. We have to focus on what we did well and the spirit and performance, our supporters appreciated the performance of the team. The shape of the team was really good. You need a bit of luck, we felt unfortunate with the lead-up to the first goal but it wasn’t to be.”

Chelsea forward Pedro Neto spoke to Sky: “This victory coming from behind was really important for us. We have to be consistent, this is the most important thing.”

“We are a big club. When you win you are the best and when you lose you are the worst so it is about being consistent and showing what we can do. To win trophies, you have to know how to suffer. We are here to suffer and do our best and to finish in the top places.”
